Intrigued by the voyeuristic portraiture of Brassaï, a focused awareness of our unnoticed surroundings unfolds: the night-time revellers one passes on a moonlit wander along the Seine, what lies beneath the imprints of their clothes, and what happens behind the dimly-lit windows of their homes.
I was captivated by the doll outline and the shape of the hair in deep contrast against the smokey blue environment. I accentuated the angles of the pose and hard edge outline, lengthening the neckline and played off the background diagonals so the horizon drops away in the bottom right of the image plane. The angles of the draped hand on the neck is very important in the leading the eye down the figure.
I used off cuts of Sumi paintings for the background as collage elements as they matched the foggy feel of the set.
