Vidya Patel is a Birmingham based dance artist, choreographer, performer and educator. Her work merges influence of Kathak, one of the major classical Indian dance forms with contemporary dance, whilst working collaboratively with music, poetry and visual arts to draw on social/ political and autobiographical themes relating to identity, belonging, nature and empowerment.⠀In 2015 Vidya represented the South Asian dance category as a finalist in BBC Young Dance 2015 at Sadler’s Wells, since, Patel has performed nationally and internationally with several world renowned companies and artists including Sir Richard Alston, Gary Clarke, Thick & Tight, Hetain Patel, Sujata Banerjee and Akademi, Sampad Arts and collaborated with Shammi Pithia, Connor Scott, Zia Ahmed and Sarathy Korwar, Abi Sampa amongst others. Her performances have been recognised, leading to nominations including three National Dance Critics Circle Awards nominations. She has premiered her own choreographic work in India and throughout the UK including Southbank Centre, Royal Opera House and Sadler’s Wells Theatre, Tate Modern Turbine Hall where she directed over 100 workshops for the public, amongst others, and will be premiering new touring outdoor work “Pravaas” produced by Akademi in 2023.
